Part relic. Part mystery. Entirely unexpected.

BURIED BETWEEN TIDES / THE MINIATURE SARCOPHAGUS PROJECT

 BURIED BETWEEN TIDES
2016–2026

For eleven summers, small sarcophagi appeared beneath the sand on beaches around the world. There were no maps, no markers, and no instructions—only the possibility of discovery.

Each object was intentionally buried and left behind, transforming ordinary shorelines into sites of quiet encounter. A child digging in the sand might uncover one. A passerby might glimpse its form and wonder how it came to be there. The work existed not in a fixed location, but in the moment of finding.

In total, 814 miniature sarcophagi were placed across coastlines spanning multiple continents. Over time, the project formed an invisible, global network of hidden artifacts—part ritual, part game, part modern folklore.

The work echoes earlier unexplained discoveries such as the 19th-century Edinburgh fairy coffins—miniature objects found concealed and unclaimed, their origins unknown, their meaning left open to interpretation. Like those artifacts, these buried forms invite speculation, imagination, and storytelling.

Buried Between Tides explores what happens when an object is left without context, waiting to be found. It asks a simple question:

What does it mean to discover something that was meant for you, but not made for you?
